Convergence or Train Wreck ? - Embodiment, Computing and Art Practice

Simon Penny is an Australian professor and researcher at the University of California, Irvine. He is also an artist and his work combine art and technology.
The period 1985-2005 was a period of radical change of computer technolgy, and radical change in social and cultural practices as these technologies moved beyond military, business and academic contexts into domestic and professional contexts. With video documentation, I will discuss several projects made over this period, each of which sought to explore the utilisation of emerging computational technologies for art and cultural practice, particularly the development of custom technologies for behavior and interaction.
Out of this practice emerged three themes which have continued to inform my research : the underlying conflicts between the ’computational world-view’ and conceptions of art practice ; the development of an aesthetics of interaction as an aspect of ’emergent complex behavior’ as discussed in Artificial Life contexts ; theories of embodied cognition and their relevance to the arts.
