Translation goes to Hollywood

Monday, May 5th 2014
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

31 rue d’Ulm
75005 Paris

Hollywood is often seen as shorthand for the cultural and linguistic homogenization of the planet. Language diversity, in particular, is seen as the first casualty as the global presence of mainstream US cinema is seen to impose the unquestioned primacy of English.

In this lecture we will ask whether this question of language and cultural uniformity is as straightforward as it appears. In other words, we will argue that issues of identity, linguistic diversity and cultural difference have haunted Hollywood throughout its history and that translation has been pivotal to the understanding of otherness in the context of mass migration and political fracture.

In the lecture we will range from John Ford and the Marx Brothers to Star Wars and Quentin Tarantino and show through a series of film extracts how Hollywood has always had to engage with a world that speaks many other languages other than its own.
