Ana Magalhães will analyze the issues of Brazilian modernism and complex relations to Europe and what is called "indigenous modernisms".

In 1924, the writer Blaise Cendrars is invited on a journey in Brazil, after his encounter with Brazilian writer Oswald de Andrade and the artist Tarsila do Amaral. He and a few other European people visited the country, a journey which had fruitful consequences on Brazilian art. Those trips become the bases for a new national project led by Brazilian "modernists". From then on, the interest for the country’s popular art and creation of cultural conservation institutions will go hand in hand with the promotion of modernism. This conference will discuss modernism in Brazil in this large sense, which initiated the construction of a new way of telling the country’s history.

Ana Gonçalves Magalhães, both professor and curator, is in charge of the modern art collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of São Paulo’s University (MAC USP) since 2008. Her research focused on Claude Monet and Edgar Degas. She recently curated the exhibition "Classicism, Realism, Avant-garde : Italian painting in interwar period" with artworks of the museum.
