Archives au présent

With new conditions imposed by "the recorded life", a life that cannot be separated from its recording and its real-time transmission, working with archives became necessary to most human practices. Is the "archive" about to become a new artistic genre, even a new medium, as ready-made and exhibitions were at the time?
Archiving practices in modern art obviously result from concerns related to historical recording of artistic objects, and from a artists’ wish to assert themselves as "artists" faced with their works being archived by academic and museographic institutions.
With this in prospect, those artists put inscription plans between material recording and symbolic institution, excluding that recording and institution be the same. Those attempts still go on nowadays. Artists are looking for archiving devices that stand in the way of their institution. Thus they show that what is at stake in contemporary arts and exhibitions of contemporary arts falls within history as much as art.
