In this book, Anne Hershberg Pierrot and Jacques Neefs gathered the proceedings of the symposium "Bouvard et Pécuchet, archives et interprétations" organized in 2013 in collaboration with the Archives Nationales, the BnF, University Johns Hopkins, Item and the Maison des écrivains.

Bouvard et Pécuchet is a comical encyclopaedic novel which originality lies in the importance of work archives, on which the fiction is based. This unfinished work only finds its meaning in the first ten chapters of the novel forming an encyclopaedic path and the "second volume", left unfinished after Flaubert died.

This collection is innovative in the sense that archives and literary creation are seen through transversal looks : BnF and Archives Nationales’ curators, international specialists of Flaubert’s criticism, science philosophers and historians, writers who consider Bouvard et Pécuchet as important for their activity of creation. This collection also appears as innovative thanks to Jacques Jouet and Pierre Senges’ texts that shows the part of literary creation in the volume.

> Anne Herschberg Pierrot is Professor at the University of Paris 8 and in charge of the Flaubert team at the Institut des textes et Manuscrits modernes (ENS-ITEM).
> Jacques Neefs is Professor of French literature at the University Johns Hopkins, Professor emeritus at the University of Paris 8 and member of the ITEM-CNRS.
