The project Experiencing Bazin consists in highlighting a unique heritage, that of 2500 texts written by André Bazin (1918-1958), a world-renowned French cinema critic. If Bazin is an outright figure in the history of worlwide cinema critique, he remains unknown and only few of his works have been published (less than 6% of his work.) Our project goes beyond the author himself and develops assessments on several written works created in the field of cinema. It aims at developing these works and helping a theoretical exploration on discourses created by cinema and access to documents.
Nowadays, Bazin represents a theoretical and editorial issue that can be analyzed in cinema studies, beyond a strictly scholar field and beyond French borders. Yet Bazin’s position in history points out French lacks and underdevelopment as far as a deep knowledge of cinema writings is concerned.
"Bazin" is the obvious paradigm of a knowledge connected to cinema both objectively outdated (although still operating) and repressed (therefore not assimilated), for lack of complete access to writings since 1958 (only 5.27% of the writings are available, according to the project leader’s research in 2003) and because of a series of misunderstandings about interpretation. Therefore, "Bazin" is at the same time from the past, "outdated", and remains an object to be studied and still to be discovered.
The project aims at publishing three works on André Bazin, including two before the end of 2013 which will be followed by two international symposiums (French-American) and a documentary movie. Between 2014 and 2015, several conferences and symposiums will be organized to present and bring out Bazin’s writings.
