“He is not truly a theorician, no more than a dogmatic, but he is an awakener.” We are not children of Bazin. We are not even bazinians anymore. But if we really are out of the 20th century, the century of cinema, then we must awaken from Bazin, and we can do so only with Bazin.
After studying Pasonlini’s work, the writer and film-maker Hervé Joubert-Laurencin literally travels across and in every way the paradoxes regarding the work of André Bazin, the cinema writer.
Hervé Joubert-Laurencin is Professor of Esthetics and History of Cinema at University Paris-Ouest Nanterre La Défense. Translator and exegete of Pasolini’s work, he also writes about film animation and cinema writing. He currently manages the laboratory HAR Cinéma (Paris Ouest) and directs the project Traverser Bazin thanks to which Le sommeil paradoxal (Rapid Eye Movement) was published by Les Editions de l’Oeil, as well as Ouvrir Bazin (Open up Bazin), a book he edited with the help of Dudley Andrew.
